Thanks to the Shadow Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, for answering my question regarding whether the ALP believes that post September, workers would be better re-skilling or up-skilling rather than staying on job keeper for those employers, including many in the hospitality and tourism industry, who won’t be in a position to offer any real prospect of future work post COVID 19. It was great to hear his thinking on how Australia can get better with a culture of life long learning and tourism. His full answer will be posted to www.tourismtraining.com.au

UNIT OF COMPETENCY FEEDBACK REQUESTED
Tourism Training Australia Chairman, John Hart, and Julian Harniman, wrote to tourism and hospitality providers inviting their feedback regarding 'Work Safely in Tourism and Hospitality’ during the COVID-19 Pandemic’ that Tourism Training Australia has commissioned.
The Unit of Competency is NOT intended a program for industry stakeholders to deliver to demonstrate work safety.
As is always the case, the Unit of Competency should be seen as an industry standard that all the various programs for work safely in tourism and hospitality during the COVID-19 should have as an outcome.
This will ensure each of the various programs have portability both across all tourism and hospitality sectors and state and local jurisdictions.
Click this Unit of Competency link to see the full draft and provide feedback by Wednesday, 20 May 2020.

NEWS
TTA Welcomes Economic Support Packages as Tourism Industry Faces Economic meltdown.
02 APRIL, 2020
Tourism Training Australia (TTA) strongly welcomed this week’s announcement that the Morrison Government will provide a historic wage subsidy to around 6 million workers who will receive a flat payment of $1,500 per fortnight through their employer, before tax for up to six months, and whose partners earn less than $3,068 per fortnight, around $79,762 per annum.
For the tourism training sector this means a subsidy, equivalent to around 70 per cent of the national median wage, being paid to training providers. If successful it would see training providers retaining their employees during a time of significant declines in revenue and if they have to close down for up to six months.
The announcement comes at a time when new research from the World Travel & Tourism Council “shows a punishing travel and tourism GDP loss to the world economy of up to $3.4 trillion in 2020 for a sector that employs 330 million people worldwide.” The Asia-Pacific region is expected to be worst hit with up to a possible 49 million jobs at risk. Vale, Michael Lee.
25 MARCH, 2020
It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that Mike Lee passed away early this morning in hospital.
He had recently suffered a non-COVID19-related lung infection and was taken to hospital on Sunday evening.
His wife Di reported that Mike was doing well last night and — true to form — was making a few jokes while she was with him, however sadly his condition worsened during the night and he passed away around 6:30am this morning.
I will continue to be in contact with Di and will keep everyone updated with any information that I receive.
I know many of the members in this group have known Mike and Di for many years. His contribution and passion for the Industry has been inspiring to all. I will personally miss his good cheer and enthusiasm at the many events we attended over a number of years.
I have express my deepest sympathy to Di on all of our behalf — I’m sure you will join me in sending your thoughts and prayers to her and the family during this difficult time.
Rest assured that Mike’s legacy will live on with the continuation of the 350 Club well into the future. When we are able to finally meet again in the coming months, we will certainly raise a glass to his memory. I hope you might be able to do the same wherever you find yourselves in the meantime.
